A “snowbird” is what we New Yorkers typically call other New Yorkers who flee the state for warmer pastures when winter hits. Snowbirds maintain their New York homes usually from March to November, then they– like migrating birds– go south for the winter. Some New Yorkers are rich enough to own a second home, while others might rent a vacation home or share a duplex with another family during those months. There are quite a few Mecombers in the Carolina and Florida areas, and these folks are originally from New York. And yes, I am related.
Vacation rentals are sometimes difficult to come by, especially the nice (clean) ones that accommodate families. I giggle sometimes when I peruse real estate listings (I peruse for fun- I am not a snowbird): “charming” may mean “prohibitively tiny,” “has character” may mean “older than the Carolina hills,” and etc. I think it’s good to get second opinions before jumping into a deal with a vacation rental company. It helps to browse online newspaper reviews, too.
The Washingtonian Magazine has a good review of Outer Banks Rental by Carolina Realty. My brother and his wife rented some beachfront homes for their wedding party guests and for their honeymoon, so it has some interest for me (unfortunately, I was unable to attend). The website for Outer Banks leaves a little to be desired– the homepage is rather simple and a little clunky. I did some searching around, and found the inner pages to be loaded with information, photos, and great prices; there are some really great pages full of beautiful vacation rentals. So the details are excellent– check it out if you would like to get a lovely oceanfront rental in North Carolina. The business caters especially to families, so the prices are great and the rental homes are large, four to sixteen bedrooms! I also like the fact that Outer Banks Rental provides bed linens and starter supplies (I just can’t imagine packing linens for sixteen bedrooms). They were rated “one of the best bets for vacation rentals” by Washingtonian, so it sounds like a great deal. My brother and his wife absolutely loved it there, especially the hot tubs. I’m sorry I missed it! Makes me want to be a snowbird after all…
