We made our annual visit to Fort Stanwix on Independence Day (July 4th). See Part 1 here. We’d been wanting to visit on the holiday for many years– finally we got to! And it was GREAT. There was a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, a stirring speech to patriotism and our true roots, [...]

Yes, more photos of our July 4th trip to Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. This is such a great place. I’ve written several posts about our visits to Fort Stanwix. It is, in my opinion, probably the best New York State park! And it’s part of the National Park Service, too. You can check out [...]

Here are more photos of our terrific visit to Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. You can read Part 1. There’s a drawbridge at the entrance. The fort was made historically accurate. Big meaty stakes with sharpened points tilt outward. There’s a big dry moat all around the fort. During times of peacefulness, the women and [...]

We absolutely adore Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. It’s one of the finest national parks, I think. The rangers and volunteers are really devoted to history, and are extremely knowledgeable as well as friendly! We try to go to this fort every year. And this year, it was extra special: we went on July 4th, [...]

On July 4th, we visited the nice city of Rome, NY, to attend a Tea Party at the City Hall. It was the first Tea Party we’d attended. I am not as politically active as I used to be, but I am still involved (and very much concerned) about the direction our nation is going; [...]
Whatever Happened to Fort Bull?

Fort Bull was one of three forts constructed during the French and Indian War to protect the Oneida Carry, a portage route in central New York State. The Oneida Carry lay between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek, as one of the important trade routes between Albany and Oneida Lake. This fort was destroyed in an Indian raid, and some say Mel Gibson borrowed its history for his Fort Wilderness take in “The Patriot.”

We are just nuts about Fort Stanwix! This is our visit in 2007, on a sweltering July day. As usual, we were not disappointed to chat with the park employees, check out the historic artifacts and gear, and watch some outstanding movies.

This center is a magnificent addition to the wonderful Fort Stanwix, one of our favorite places to visit. The center has a mini-museum with artifacts, an interactive history section, and a terrific theatre that shows movies about the history of the Fort and the Revolutionary War. The movies are outstanding– filmed locally and starring park employees. There’s also the best gift shop we’ve ever enjoyed!

As promised, my daughter has penned a brief history of Fort Ticonderoga, the park we recently visited. You can ride on over to here to read about our enthralling visit, and then come on back for a little history lesson. FORT TICONDEROGA In America’s early decades, before the independence of the colonies from the European [...]

Sitting quietly on the pier on Ontario Lake, in Oswego, NY, sits a tiny little museum with a mascot tugboat. Don’t let the simple and small exterior fool you– inside lies a massive museum of naval exploration. What a terrific place!
