Birding, Big Time

This is it. The time when hundreds of different species of migrating birds return to Upstate New York for nesting. Western New York, specifically Wayne County, and more specifically the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, is a bird-lovers paradise. This is from the I Love NY Newsletter, the Beat: Hot off the presses and just in [...]

This enormous 50,000 acre wildlife refuge has been described as “one of the best examples of undisturbed swamp woodlands in New York or New England.” This area is an important stopping point for North Amerian migratory birds and local waterfowl. It’s a wonderful to explore.

Beaver Lake Nature Center

Here’s a great nature place to visit! This is a wonderfully wooded and wild place to go. It has a network of trails, all geared for exploring nature. We saw lots of wildlife and enjoyed our forest trail walk.

Roscoe Conkling Park, Utica, NY

The Roscoe Conkling Park, named for a prestigious Utica mayor and congressman, sits high atop a hill behind the historic Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica, NY. A ski center, trails, parks, and the many historic monuments make this experience uniquely Utican.

I went there on my quest to find the sacred Oneida Indian Stone, which had once been standing at the cemetery entrance. All that was left of the Stone’s presence was it’s platform and a historical marker…

Fort Stanwix, Rome, NY: Summer 2007

We are just nuts about Fort Stanwix! This is our visit in 2007, on a sweltering July day. As usual, we were not disappointed to chat with the park employees, check out the historic artifacts and gear, and watch some outstanding movies.

General Clinton Canoe Regatta News

In an earlier post, I mentioned the General Clinton Canoe Regatta held every Memorial Day weekend, in Bainbridge, NY. The Canoe Regatta is the biggest event for the sleepy little town of historic Bainbridge. (By the way, Mormon-founder Joseph Smith was run out of this town for corrupting public morals; Jedediah Smith (not related), that [...]
