Finally! A New New York Travel Guide!

You could say we at the Mecomber homestead “collect” New York travel guide brochures. (A more accurate word might be “hoard” travel guides and brochures.) We have two desk drawers stuffed with all the brochures we’ve collected from our travels. They do come in handy! We yank them out of the drawer a day or two before we take a trip. We use the extras for pictures –the kids clip out the pictures and tape them into their reports.

Some of the brochures are very, very nice. We love the Heritage Corridor one, which details major attractions of American Revolution historic sites, and another one on historic sites of the Mohawk Valley. Unfortunately, not all brochures are as informational.

I’m hoping this will change, now that New York State has announced the development of another travel guide. This one is focusing on the Erie Canal Corridor “experience” that will combine history and education with tourism resources, historic sites, and etc. It sounds like the guide will be quite detailed. I am looking forward to seeing it. And using it! We hope to get out to Auburn/Rochester area again sometime and explore the western end of the old Erie Canal.

By the way, if you are looking for some New York travel guides, go here. They are available online, or via mail.

I love the old sections of the Erie canal that are left. Get to the locks in Lockport if you get the chance. I also like to travel through Medina. Every June we have Canal Days in Phoenix for the students to learn more about the old days on the Oswego canal. I’m looking forward to the guide as I don’t know enough about the eastern end of the canal.

It’s really great that the state is promoting all Upstate has to offer along the Canal.

When I was a kid, we boated down the Canal and through the locks… perhaps in Lockport or thereabouts. It was a pretty neat experience. I hope to take my kids to Erie Canal Village in Rome this summer!
