Fulton’s Folly

Somebody at the I Love NY Tourism Website needs to get a few things straight, lol. In the past I’ve found a few tourist listings errors, but this one takes the cake. It’s telling me that the city of Fulton, NY, is in Schoharie County.

Formed in 1828, Fulton is the largest town (65 square miles) in Schoharie County. Fulton is also home to some of the most captivating natural treasures in Schoharie County!

Dominating the skyline in the central part of the county is Vroman’s Nose, a short, steep hike up to the top of a cliff with a resplendent view. Rising about 600-feet above the surrounding farmlands, the “Nose” resulted from glacial action more than 50,000 years ago. It is located on the Long Path, a 335-mile hiking trail that runs from the George Washington Bridge in New York City to Thatcher Park in Albany County…

Sorry, this is not a description of the city of Fulton in the Thousand Islands region! Oops!

I had done the search of the “Thousand Islands region” at NY’s website (Oswego County, at the western end of the state, is in this region). When I click on “Fulton” under this region, it catapults me to the far eastern side of New York, to Schoharie County and the “town” of Fulton. Lol!

Since this is New York’s “Official” Tourism Website, it is embarrassing that they can’t get the two places right. Needless to say, there isn’t anything touristy listed for Fulton, NY (the city).

Well, the link doesn’t take you to Fulton county, which is what I guessed when I started reading. There isn’t much here. If you click on my town, Palermo, you get some of the Fulton hits. Clicking on Hannibal will bring up more. The chocolate factory is now closed so no more wonderful smell has you drive through town. It’s sad that the tourism site doesn’t mention Lake Neatahwanta at all. Definitely the prettiest spot in town!

I did a search for the area of Hannibal. There’s a nice lighthouse at Sodus Bay (but it’s closed). And there’s a nice red schoolhouse in Sterling (but it’s closed). Not sure what we’ll do, actually. I’d like to see the Lights on the Lake.

I remember the chocolate factory– Nestle’s, right? My aunt used to work there, and every Christmas guess what her gifts to us were?

    YUM.

Back in the day when only giant corps could have websites, I Love NY served as the state’s data warehouse. Nobody else really had a system to collect and house information.

Well, the desire to be the end-all for tourism information in the state is not easy. This “city listing” thing was a result of seeing a similar thing Texas was doing. It was the hope that each county’s tourism office would submit detailed community information to be published. Gads, what a wish that is. I think simply linking to a Google Map listing would be far better than wrong info.

Not sure what they will do with that website, it is under review and the new agency has plans, but it is not in the budget for this year. Without doubt, there is unanimous agreement that the current data handling function needs to be evolved. If we can survive this year’s budget battle and the economy doesn’t tank, then next year I think we will see some big changes.

You’re right, no informations is better than no information… but why settle for second-best? Why not have information, and correct information?

TourPro, I LOVE the Cities&Towns feature of the I Love NY Website. I use it every time we travel to a new place. I know the website probably doesn’t have EVERY attraction listed, but they have a whole lot! It is a feature of NYS web tourist resources that I hope and pray is not eliminated. I would even be very happy to help out, by scouring the web for even the most obscure attractions and compiling it all into a list. Or… maybe that’s something for an independent to do, rather than the state.

    Thanks for the insight.
