Photo Hunters: Bags

This is a fun Photo Hunters theme this week! I may not have a lot of time to surf the PH blogs today, but I hope to get to it this evening or tomorrow. So, please leave your link in the comments if you’d like me to visit!

I get to be a little creative with this weeks’ theme. :) There’s a place called Bagg’s Square in Utica, NY, that we visited last year. Moses Bagg was a tavern keeper, waaaaay back when, in the days of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. As a matter of fact, these men stayed at Bagg’s Tavern once upon a time. This was the very spot where the city of Utica began. Later, Fort Schuyler was constructed here as a defense in the American Revolution.

Today, the area is a tiny spot in the center if a big tangled snarl of highways and byways. Bagg’s Square is such an important part of the history of Utica, but it seems forgotten amongst the clarion for “progress.”

Also, when I thought of bags, I thought “eyes.” Yeah…. I’m getting a little older, and they’re starting to show up! My grandmother used to have whopper bags under her eyes. For a long time, I thought I would, too. But when I got older, I realized that her tired look on her face was mostly due to overwork. When you’re a kid, I guess you don’t realize how hard some adults work, how they worry. My grandmother took care of her invalid husband for most of their married life, as well as a handful of other ailing and homeless relatives. I guess she never did get much sleep!

She died many years ago. I miss her an awful lot sometimes.

Another bag is one that was filled by my darling kitty, Livvy. She likes to find hiding places, although this one was a very bad one (bags are not safe). We have a very cute meme every Friday called Find the Kitty at my other blog, if you’d like to see how well she can hide sometimes (and how well she can’t).

Also along the theme of bags is… and this may be a stretch, but… a Tea Party we attended in July, in Rome, NY. I didn’t see any tea bags, but I’ve heard that people do bring them to these meetings.

And this has absolutely nothing to do with bags, but I add it because I got such a kick out of it. We visited a museum that had a 1800s reproduction of a tavern. The woodwork was beautiful. On the cash register was a wooden plaque that said, “ALL NATIONS WELCOME EXCEPT CARRIE.” We found that hilarious. If you don’t know why this is so funny, you can read about Carrie Nation here.

So how did your Photo Hunters go today?

quite interesting place and I really like it that there’s a marker that indicates the importance of the place amidst all that progress. It’s a good reminder for everybody.

The Bagg’s Tavern is a great find! I would guess that Carrie Nation missed this one in her crusade.

I love your take on the theme! I always enjoy your snippets of history, but I confess I had to look up Carrie Nation. :)

Mine is a hastily put together post because Blogger has been intermittently out for much of Europe.

Interesting twist on bags! Very clever!

I know that some of the most beautiful and interesting parts of New York can sometimes be the ones that don’t make it onto post cards. This looks like a cool, charming little place to visit!

Hey Fitness Diva– New York is truly so beautiful. It’s actually known for two things– it’s incredible rich beauty, and it’s horribly high taxes from corrupt politics and mismanagement. It’s such a shame.

I appreciate comments! Please leave yours here.
