I’ve been thinking a lot about water these days, so today’s Photo Hunt is appropriate. The flooding in the Mid West is reminding me of the traumatic flooding we Upstate New Yorkers experienced two years ago in June and July. The southern part of the state was hit tremendously hard; my area (Central New York) was hit hard, but not as hard as the Southern Tier. At any rate, we saw a great deal of flooding that year. Here are a few photos I snapped when the floods were rising in our yard.

We saw three feet of water in the basement; one foot in the yard. It was pretty messy. The floods destroyed our furnace and everything that was in stored in it. The floods also swept away half of my vegetable garden, and replanted some flowers in my flower beds. It took a long time to clean, ugh! And to this day, I get a little uneasy when it starts to rain heavily.
I live in a very wet area of the state, so we are still working to divert the water that comes with torrential rains. I believe that over-development (urban and suburban sprawl) is mostly to blame for our flooding problems in this area. We’ve never experienced anything like this. I hope we never have to, again!
How did your Photo Hunt go today?

I hope you will not experience any more flood or back up water.
In 2004, we experienced 10 inches of rain in 2 hours that caused damages to a bunch of our friends’ furnace, fridge, washer, freezer, dryer and etc. in the basement. It was a great mess. Many claimed for backed up water damage of up to 5% the appraised value of the house from the insurance companies. Now they have installed submersible pumps.
My house was not flooded but I could not go home as I had to pass the flood areas before I could go to higher ground to my house.

We had floods too, a few weeks ago. Messy is right!

That water must have been horrible. I hope you don’t have to go through that again.

Gosh, flooding really is very terrible and destructive. I hope the water in all the affected areas recedes soon.

I remember one summer I spent with my dad in Texas. They lived on the Trinity river. Thank goodness the water never got into their home, but the flooding was bad. Most houses were built on stilts because of the flooding risk being on the river.

Oh, I remember another flood back in 1972. We had been on vacation in Maine, and when we came back, the entire Susquehanna Valley was water. Our house was up in the mountains, so neither flood did any damage, but it sure made it interesting getting in and out. We had to drive miles out of the way to get into Binghamton. I hear the last flood you’re talking about did the same. I left NY in 2004 and missed it.

Wow, that’s a lot of water. I don’t want to imagine the work you had with cleaning up. I remember when Germany hit a flood some years ago. We have gone there to help with the clean up. It was horrible to see all those belongings of families who lost everything, I have even seen a half house which was cut off by the flood.
