I’ll Pass

The tables have turned. I found this tidbit at Thailand of Smiles a week ago.
It’s funny I remember when I was a kid and mom would drag us to the dime store or it’s equivalent and all the cheesy knick knack stuff and plastic furniture would have made in Thailand or made in China stickers on them. Back then in the 70’s anything with those tags was considered pretty much junk.
These days it’s not so funny when you go to the store and see the junk items have made in America on them and quality furniture and electronics are coming from all over Asia. Even less funny in these days of hightened security is the fact that the one item you would hope is made in America, your passport, isn’t.
Obviously the American government can’t use the internet and I’m sure their yellow pages is outdated because they claimed that there was no company in America that could make this chip. So in their infinite wisdom they outsourced the job to forign companies such as Smartrac Technologies, a Dutch company.
So our American passports are made in Asia. And those little electronic chips are made in Asia. Of course, the electronic information is added here in the U.S., but how can the U.S. justify this, when jobs, manufacturing, and data is all being sent overseas? It isn’t plastic toys and crib bedding made in Asia anymore– now our own government services are being exported?!

I’ve made so many new and wonderful friends living in Asia! What a wonderful region (and what yummy-looking food they have!). I’d love to visit some of the countries in Asia someday. I have always been awed by the festive cultures on that side of the world, with their brilliantly-colored foods and clothing, and luxurious beaches. I’m even more eager to see Asia when I look over one of the best online travel guides for Asia: AsiaTravelMarket.com. It’s like having your very own Asia tourist guide!
