<p>Oh this was such an easy theme for me this week! Not because I love metal things, but because I always seem to run across them when we travel. We visit a lot of historic sites, and usually the weaponry and transport items are metal.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the <em>Mohawk Valley</em>, an old bomber plane that saw service in <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">World War II</span> the Vietnam War and the Persian Gulf War. It&#8217;s a B-52 stratofortress. It&#8217;s resting at the old <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/griffiss-air-force-base-technology-park-rome-ny/">Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY</a>, now (click the link to read about our visit and see more photos). The base was closed in the 90s and is now a &#8220;technology&#8221; park.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Bomber at Griffiss by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2236571237/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2408/2236571237_79ae9d05d2.jpg" alt="Bomber at Griffiss" width="500" height="371" /></a></p>
<p>This is one of the bombs that loaded into the stratofortress.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Bomb by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2236573085/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2147/2236573085_aea8e33237.jpg" alt="Bomb" width="500" height="288" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the U.S.S. Slater, a Destroyer-Escort <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">battle</span>ship that also served in World War II. It rests on the Hudson River in Albany, NY. It&#8217;s a museum now. It&#8217;s an amazing ship, and we loved going thorough its many nooks and crannies. You can read more about our trip: <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/aboard-the-uss-slater-in-albany-ny/">U.S.S. Slater in Albany</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Slater by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2262628781/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2327/2262628781_b5bc97e4e5.jpg" alt="Slater" width="406" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>This is the machine gun and scope.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="05 Checking Out the Scope of Things by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2261416637/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2088/2261416637_aebb776321.jpg" alt="05 Checking Out the Scope of Things" width="439" height="500" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s another weapon. It&#8217;s the cannon at Fort Stanwix National Historic Site. We love this place. It&#8217;s also in Rome, NY. You can read about our trips there, <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/our-2006-visit-to-fort-stanwix-rome-ny/">here</a> and <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/fort-stanwix-rome-ny-summer-2007/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="At the Cannon by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/3068392982/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3177/3068392982_6a87f70aa1.jpg" alt="At the Cannon" width="500" height="414" /></a></p>
<p>I have billions more photos of metal things! But I&#8217;ll control myself and leave you with just one more. This is a funky metal chair that sits on top of the hill at the <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/roscoe-conkling-park-utica-ny/">Roscoe Conkling Park in Utica, NY</a>. It&#8217;s next to the historic <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/forest-hill-cemetery-utica-ny/">Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica</a>. Click the links for more of our visit with photos.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="tn_Tin Chair by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/3067558173/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/3067558173_e6d81e8e2a.jpg" alt="tn_Tin Chair" width="500" height="371" /></a></p>
<p>This was a fun Photo Hunt this week! How did your Photo Hunt go today?</p>

<p>Well this is an easy theme for the New York Traveler! I love roads, especially open ones. This is one of my favorite photos. It&#8217;s Route 9 in the Adirondack Park, near Lake George. It is a wild, rugged place. This is the road that made me carsick for the first time in 20 years. You can read about our travels to this area <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/lake-george-and-fort-ticonderoga-ny/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Get Yer Kicks on Rt 9 by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2871885369/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3279/2871885369_ef613d714f.jpg" alt="Get Yer Kicks on Rt 9" width="500" height="276" /></a></p>
<p>This is the road we walked to see Fort Ticonderoga, a 300-year old fort that defended the American colonies from the French in 1754 and from the British in 1776. It&#8217;s right on the border of New York and Vermont&#8211; the beautiful Lake Champlain divides it. It&#8217;s a beautiful area. Isn&#8217;t New York beautiful in the autumn?</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Road to Fort Ti by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2871889911/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3095/2871889911_0502f1ea19.jpg" alt="Road to Fort Ti" width="500" height="371" /></a></p>
<p>Here we are walking down another Adirondack Park <span id="more-1012"></span>road, although this road is all the way on the other side of the park, a 3-hour drive west. It&#8217;s in White Lake, NY. I love how the trees make a zigzag pattern in the sky. See more about our trip <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/route-28-to-white-lake-adirondacks/">here</a> and <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/baron-von-steuben-memorial-site-remsen-ny/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Walking Down Round Lake Rd by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2872728236/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3242/2872728236_4edd7ee32f.jpg" alt="Walking Down Round Lake Rd" width="500" height="371" /></a></p>
<p>This is a photo of Fort Ontario, all the way on the other side of New York State. Lake Ontario is the border between us and Canada. Fort Ontario is another very old fort, used during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution to defend our borders. You can read more about our visit <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/fort-ontario-in-oswego-ny/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Entering the Fort by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2872749146/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3132/2872749146_92890957fd.jpg" alt="Entering the Fort" width="500" height="277" /></a></p>
<p>Do &#8220;streets&#8221; count for today? Here&#8217;s a street in lovely Cooperstown, NY. We visited it, see <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/a-trip-to-cooperstown-ny/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Main St Cooperstown by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2871899063/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/2871899063_d4ca3dd897.jpg" alt="Main St Cooperstown" width="500" height="288" /></a></p>
<p>And here&#8217;s an older photo I took of 28th Street in Manhattan, when I lived there in the 1980s.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Apartmt by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2871897071/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3187/2871897071_fea746ac3d_o.jpg" alt="Apartmt" width="500" height="511" /></a></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the road to the historic Utica Insane Asylum, built in the mid 1800s but in great disrepair now. It&#8217;s known throughout the world as being the finest example of Greek Revival Architecture anywhere. It is a stunning building. You can read much more about it <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/utica-lunatic-asylum/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="The Drive by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2872736676/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3066/2872736676_a228f08953.jpg" alt="The Drive" width="500" height="375" /></a></p>
<p>And here is a photo of Erie Boulevard in Syracuse, looking downtown. We had visited the Erie Canal Museum&#8211; what fun! See more about our visit <a href="http://newyorktraveler.net/erie-canal-museum-in-syracuse-ny-part-one/">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a title="Downtown Syracuse by mrsmecomber, on Flickr" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/74875296@N00/2871914957/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3080/2871914957_bee109e54e.jpg" alt="Downtown Syracuse" width="500" height="417" /></a></p>
