More Fort Stanwix Photos

Yes, more photos of our July 4th trip to Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. This is such a great place. I’ve written several posts about our visits to Fort Stanwix. It is, in my opinion, probably the best New York State park! And it’s part of the National Park Service, too. You can check out more information by going to www.nps.gov to learn more about Fort Stanwix and other national parks.

Now for the photos! I recommend that you enlarge the first photo for the full effect. The fort is surrounded by a high earthen berm, for added protection against invading enemies. So the view is really great!

Fort Stanwix Photos

Here are more photos of our terrific visit to Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. You can read Part 1.

There’s a drawbridge at the entrance. The fort was made historically accurate. Big meaty stakes with sharpened points tilt outward. There’s a big dry moat all around the fort. During times of peacefulness, the women and children camped in these big ditches.

Inside the fort is a great big spacious area, with wooden walls leading to rooms. You can wander freely inside the rooms.

There are a variety of rooms– captain’s quarters, soldier’s quarters, missionary’s quarters, the “Suttler’s” room (like a general store), and more. It’s really great to meander throughout the grounds! Read more

It Was Only 53 Years Ago!

I saw this somewhere and just have to pass it along, for posterity’s sake!

‘I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.’

‘It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.’

‘It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.’

‘Marriage doesn’t mean a thing any more, those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.’

‘I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.’

‘Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.’

‘The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.’

‘There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.’

‘No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it’s too rich for my blood.’

‘If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.’

JUST THINK, this was all only 53 years ago. So in 53 years, Americans and American politicians have totally wrecked our country! :S

I admit, I am envious of you Baby Boomers, with your tales about the family vacations of the 50s and 60– you who hopped in your cars and drove across the United States, in freedom and adventure. Nowadays, we can’t even see the Capitol Building in DC for fear of “terrorists,” and the government is now instituting a “your papers please” society where we won’t even be able to cross state lines without showing our ID.

Only 53 years ago…. ’twas a different world.

Rome Sports Hall of Fame

Central New York is most known for its historical significance, but this area is also very popular for sports attractions. The Boxing Hall of Fame is in Canastota, NY, (I have yet to see it), and the Rome Sports Hall of Fame is in Rome. We visited the Sports Hall of Fame the same day we visited the Erie Canal Village. The Rome Sports Hall of Fame is right next to the Erie Canal Village, and admission is free. I know almost nothing about sports, so I just wandered around and took photos.

There are multitudes of sports memorabilia, for local and national sports. Two of the most prominent displays are for Richie Evans and Jerry Cook, Rome natives and NASCAR champions.

Yes, that’s my son in the car. Kids are allowed to check it out. :-D

Richie Evans died in a crash in 1985, racing at the Martinsville Speedway. His career was stellar; he was a local champ at the Utica-Rome Speedway, and climbed the ladder to be win the NASCAR National Modified Championships nine times.

Jerry Cook also started his career at the local Utica-Rome Speedway, and won the NASCAR Modified series six time. He is retired and lives in the area.

You can see a few more of my photos of the museum here at my Flickr page.

Rome, NY, is one of my favorite cities to visit!
