Now here’s a gift for the man who has everything: radar guns! I can think of a million ways to use something like this. They are becoming popular tools for measuring golf swings, baseball throws, and *ahem* car speeds, but they can also be used to measure how fast a person is running, how fast a snowmobile is going, or a speedboat on the lake is speeding. These are quite the marvelous little tools. I was surprised to discover that they are available to the general public. Cool!
Check out this bad boy– the Stalker Sport model– cordless, lasts up to 20 hours, LCD display, nice 2-year warranty. Free shipping and U.S. made, too! Woohoo! The electronic capabilities to the gun are amazing to me. This thing will show the “out of the hand” reading (ball out of pitcher’s hand) as far as 350 feet away. Incredible! Oh man, there’s also something called a “surface velocity gun”– too cool! It can be used to measure the surface velocity of streams and rivers! That would be incredibly useful around here.
When I was a kid, my brother and I were always trying to measure velocity. We didn’t have handy radar guns back then (I wonder if even the police had them that far back?). Instead, we used our mo-ped. One of us would ride the mo-ped and the other would run alongside. Judging by the speedometer on the mo-ped, that’s how fast we figured we ran. (I ran up to 14 miles per hour, if you are interested, and if our method had any accuracy). I think we would have appreciated a radar gun more. Think of all the things it could measure!
The Utica Boilermaker is coming up– wouldn’t it be fun to measure the speed of the runners? Come to think of it, I think I have seen judges or some folks with radar guns there. I also wonder if they use these at the local baseball games, too? Check out the website– they’ve got radar traffic speed displays and road signs, too. Now I’d like to have one of those on the curb, let me tell you!
